Counselling & Psychotherapy: in-person or online
Welcome to Auckland City Therapy
Jon and Amanda have each been working in mental health for more than two decades. We are registered psychotherapists with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand (PBANZ) and see clients in person at our Titirangi practice in Auckland, and online throughout New Zealand.
We don't work from a script or a fixed programme. We draw on the most suitable therapeutic frameworks for you, whether that means developing practical skills, understanding the dynamics in your relationships, or making sense of what's happening in your life right now. We try to meet each person as they actually are, rather than who they think they're supposed to be, and we fit our approach to you, not the other way around.
Our Services
We incorporate a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques ranging from brief, solution focused counselling for working through immediate problems, through to in-depth, psychodynamic psychotherapy focusing on long term personality change. We utilise these approaches in individual therapy as well as in couples therapy.
-
Counselling helps you deal with those difficult situations or experiences that are too hard to manage alone
-
Couples therapy will help you understand what is causing conflict or causing you to drift apart
-
Psychotherapy is about understanding and improving those aspects of your personality that are problematic
-
Online therapy sessions are the most convenient and time efficient way to connect

Jon Hay
Jon Hay is a registered psychotherapist with a postgraduate specialisation in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He works with individuals and couples, and has a particular interest in working with neurodivergent adults, people with autism, ADHD, or both, who often find that traditional therapy doesn't quite fit how their minds work. Jon sees clients online throughout New Zealand.

Amanda Cox
Amanda Cox is a registered psychotherapist working with individuals and couples. She brings warmth, depth, and over two decades of experience to her work, and has a particular interest in relationships, the ones we have with others, and the one we have with ourselves. Amanda sees clients both in person in Titirangi and online.
We work with all kinds of minds
We work with a growing number of neurodivergent clients and have developed a particular interest in this area. Many conventional therapies assume everyone thinks and communicates the same way. This can leave neurodivergent people feeling a subtle sense of mismatch or pressure to conform. If you’ve felt that disconnect but haven’t been able to make sense of it or put it into words, we welcome that perspective.
Because we understand neurodivergent ways of living from both a professional and lived standpoint, we draw on a range of modalities. We aim to adapt our therapeutic space to how you naturally process the world.
We see neurodivergent individuals, and we also work with couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent — a dynamic that brings its own particular challenges and strengths.
While we don't offer formal diagnostic assessments, we welcome you whether you already have a diagnosis or have simply found yourself resonating with things you've read about autism or ADHD. The goal is the same: to help you understand yourself a little better.

This is understandably a common question and the answer varies widely for each person. Whilst some people will get the clarity that they need after only a few sessions, most people will have ongoing therapy that continues for as long as needed. We do not restrict the number of sessions for anybody; we work in an open ended style and we are available for you until you get to a place where you feel able to manage by yourself.
